People are ready to watch offbeat films: Radhika Apte

While several actors limit themselves to Bollywood, Radhika Apte has also made a name for herself in Tamil cinema. She recently played the lead role in the Rajinikanth-starrer Kabali. She has also acted in several Marathi and Telugu films.
The actor strongly believes that “it is better to compare two films instead of comparing two genres or two film industries”.
“Not all film units work in the same manner. My experience has been different on every set. Of course, industries are influenced by certain cultures, traditions and lifestyles. That is something one needs to adapt to while working [on the project],” she says.
Radhika’s upcoming movie won the Best Indie Film award at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, Australia, recently. Does the actor feel Indian audiences are ready to watch offbeat films on the big screen? “They are more ready than they were earlier. We, too, are better prepared and motivated to make such films. The fact that such movies are being backed in India is an achievement in itself,” she says.
Radhika also acted in two short films, Ahalya (2015) and Kriti, which were released on YouTube. Ask the actor if releasing these projects online, where the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) could not impose any cuts, gave the makers more liberties in terms of the content they could present, and she says, “Since there was no content that the CBFC could object to, it didn’t feel like I or the cast had any additional creative liberties.”
