Woman accuses man of rape, 4 among prime accused held

Kolkata, Oct 27: Following a complaint by a woman that she was allegedly raped by a man she had befriended on social media, the police tonight arrested four persons, including the prime accused.
The woman lodged a complaint at Beniapukur police station last night alleging that Chittaranjan Patro, a resident of Kandhamal district of Odisha, whom she had met in a social media website a few months ago, raped her yesterday.
The police tonight arrested Patro (40) and three others for allegedly assisting the prime accused 'in the act' from Bartala area of the city, a senior Kolkata Police officer said.
The others were identified as Surya Kant Das, Prabhat Shaw and Satya Swarup Sahoo.
All the accused, who hailed from Kandhamal district, were booked under IPC Section 376 (rape) and 120B (criminal conspiracy).
The victim said in her complaint that the accused had identified himself as a senior officer of a private firm and offered her a job. She said she was called for an interview at a hotel in the eastern parts of the city yesterday, and was raped by him inside a room there.
"We have acquired the photocopy of the identity card used by the person to book the room. We are also checking the CCTV footage," an officer of Beniapukur police station said. He said four persons had accompanied the prime accused when he had come to book the room in the afternoon, while the complainant had visited him in the evening.
The woman has been sent for a medical test.
