Transporters observe strike, ‘chakka jam’

JAMMU, Mar 28: Privately owned passenger bus operators held a protest here on Thursday against the operation of Smart City e-buses.
The transporters announced one-day token strike against operation of e-buses, which they alleged are affecting their livelihood.
The Transporters Association leader claimed that the officials are not ready to listen to their requests, and their adamant approach towards the crisis is further adding fuel to the fire.
He added that the government and transporters have entered into an agreement to run e-buses on uncovered and less congested routes, but the administration unilaterally violated the agreement and started operations of e-buses in all busy routes, causing hardships to private transporters.
"Earlier, while introducing e-rickshaws, the government failed to address the issue of auto owners, which rendered them unemployed," said the transporters, adding that e-buses are meant for uncovered areas of the city, and if they want to ply on overpopulated routes, the government should think about their livelihood as well.
"We will be observing 'chakka jam' on Friday in view of the unruly behaviour of the officials, who are not willing to address their concerns," the transporters stated.
