Weather improves, likely to remain dry after snowfall in Kashmir

SRINAGAR, Jan 17: The weather improved on Friday after the Kashmir Valley experienced fresh snowfall on Thursday, officials reported.
According to the Meteorological Centre in Srinagar, the weather is expected to remain dry across Jammu and Kashmir on Friday. However, there is a chance of light snowfall at isolated higher elevations between January 18 and 19.
"Overall, no significant weather activity is expected until January 18," the Met office stated.
Another spell of light snowfall is expected at isolated to scattered locations on January 20 and 21. Furthermore, the MeT has predicted light rain in the plains of Jammu and snowfall at scattered to fairly widespread locations in the Kashmir Valley on January 22.
Meanwhile, there was significant improvement in cold weather conditions after higher reaches of the Kashmir Valley, along with some plains, received snowfall and rains; night temperature improved at most weather stations on Friday.
The night temperature in Srinagar recorded during the intervening night of Thursday and Friday further witnessed an improvement and recorded at a low of -2.0°C against the -2.5°C the previous day, the Met office said, adding this was normal for the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir during the period.
The night temperature again slipped down at the tourist resort of Pahalgam after experiencing snowfall a day ago and turned out to be the coldest place again with a low of -11.8°C on Friday against the -4.2°C on the previous day. This was 5.5°C below normal for the Valley of Shepherds during the period.
The minimum temperature at Gulmarg stayed at -7.0°C for the second consecutive day on Friday, and it was 0.8°C above normal for the famous ski resort in north Kashmir's Baramulla district for the day.
Kupwara also dipped to a low of -27°C against the -1.9°C, and this was still 0.2°C above normal for the frontier Kashmir district during this period of the season.
The night temperature at the picnic spot of Kokernag in south Kashmir dropped by a few notches after snowfall and was recorded at -2.4°C against -2.2°C the previous night, and it was 1.1°C above the average for the picnic spot during the period.
The minimum temperature at Qazigund on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway further improved and was recorded at -2.4°C on Friday against the -3.8°C a day ago, and it was 0.7°C above normal for the gateway to Kashmir during the period, the Met office said.
