Sawhney mourns passing of Justice Vinod Gupta (Retd)

Jammu, Feb 15: Mr. A.K. Sawhney, Advocate and former President of the J&K High Court Bar Association Jammu, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Justice (Retd) Vinod Ku-mar Gupta, former Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh and Jharkhand High Courts.
Justice Gupta passed away this evening in New Delhi after a brief illness at the age of 77.
He is survived by his mother, wife Usha, daughter Ruchira Gupta, and son Gaurav. Justice Gupta breathed his last at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi, where he had been receiving treatment for approximately a month.
His death has left a profound impact on his friends and former colleagues in both the Bar and the Bench in Jammu.
A graduate of Delhi University, Justice Gupta completed his law degree in 1970 and began his legal career as a junior to the late D.D. Thakur at the Jammu High Court.
He was actively involved in the Jammu Bar Association and, during his tenure as a Judge of the J&K High Court, served as Vice President of the Jammu Club, where he played a pivotal role in enhancing its infrastructure.
Throughout his illustrious career, he served as the Central Government's Standing Counsel and was appointed Advocate General of Jammu and Kashmir in 1990.
He was later elevated to the position of Judge at the J&K High Court and served as a Judge of the Calcutta High Court for four years.
In November 2000, he became the first Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court. In 2003, he was appointed Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court, from which he retired on September 9, 2009.His cremation will take place in New Delhi tomorrow.
