DGP reaches encounter site to oversee ongoing operation

JAMMU, Mar 23: An encounter broke out between terrorists and security forces in Kathua on Sunday evening, officials said.
The encounter started when security forces launched a search operation in Sanyal village near the International Border (IB) in Hiranagar sector following information about the presence of suspected terrorists in the area, the officials said.
They said reinforcements have been rushed to the spot and further details are awaited.
An official said that security forces launched a cordon and search operation in the area after receiving specific input about the presence of terrorists.
As the joint team of forces approached the suspected spot, the hiding terrorists opened fire, triggering an encounter.
Intermittent exchange of fire is going on, and additional reinforcements have been rushed to the area.
Meanhile, a 7-year-old girl suffered minor injuries in exchange of fire between militants and security forces.
They said the girl Anchal Kumari (7), daughter of Nago of Bihar at present W.NO. 11, Hiranagar near Radha Swami Ashram got minor injury and was shifted to nearby hospital.
The exchange of fire ensued after a joint team of Police, Army and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation amid specific inputs about presence of terrorists in Hiranagar.
As the joint team of forces encircled the suspected spot, the hiding terrorists fired upon the forces, which was retaliated by the joint team of security forces.
As per the sources there is intelligence inputs about presence of three to five militants in the area.
Director General of Police (DGP), Nalin Prabhat on Sunday evening reached Sanyal, Hiranagar to personally monitor the ongoing anti-terrorist operation.
Reports said that DGP Nalin Prabhat has reached the encounter site in person to monitor and oversee the anti-terrorist operation.
Reports said that 4-5 heavily armed terrorists are believed to be trapped inside the cordon. The security forces have tightened the cordon layers around the area, while senior security officials continue to assess the ground situation.
In wake of the encounter, neighbouring districts in Punjab were placed on high alert, with additional security forces deployed to prevent any potential escape or infiltration, reports said
It also said that the ongoing anti-terrorist operation was halted due to low visibility, with plans to resume at first light tomorrow.
Authorities have intensified surveillance and placed strict checkpoints in the surrounding areas, reports added.
