The cusp of a new era

28/03/2025

The recent decision by two more Hurriyat-affiliated groups-J&K Tahreeqi Isteqlal and J&K Tahreek-I-Istiqamat-to renounce separatism marks a watershed moment in the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir. This development, coupled with similar announcements by other organizations earlier this month, underscores a growing shift towards peace and integration in the region. Union Home Minister Amit Shah aptly described it as the "triumph of unity echoing across Kashmir," a testament to the transformative policies of the NarendraModi-led government. For decades, Jammu and Kashmir has been marred by the shadows of separatism, cross-border terrorism, and political unrest. The Hurriyat Conference, a conglomerate of separatist groups, has long been a symbol of resistance against Indian governance. However, the recent defections from its ranks signal a significant erosion of its influence. This is not merely a political victory but a reflection of the changing aspirations of the people of Kashmir, who yearn for stability, development, and a place in the larger narrative of a unified India.
The Modi government's unwavering focus on addressing the root causes of unrest in the region has been pivotal in this transformation. The abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir, was a bold step towards integrating the region with the rest of the country. While the move was met with criticism and skepticism, the subsequent efforts to foster development, ensure security, and promote grassroots democracy have begun to yield tangible results. The decision of these Hurriyat groups to align with the vision of a "new Bharat" is a vindication of these policies. Amit Shah's assertion that separatism is "breathing its last" in Kashmir is not mere rhetoric. The banning of organizations like the Awami Action Committee and the Jammu and Kashmir IttihadulMuslimeen for anti-national activities, combined with the voluntary renunciation of separatism by other groups, indicates a clear decline in the appeal of divisive ideologies. This shift is also a reflection of the growing realization among Kashmiris that separatism has only perpetuated violence and hindered progress.
The renunciation of separatism by these groups is a call to action for others still clinging to outdated ideologies. It is an opportunity for all stakeholders to come together and work towards a future defined by peace, prosperity, and unity. The government, for its part, must continue to address grievances, ensure inclusive development, and foster dialogue with all sections of society. As Jammu and Kashmir stands at the cusp of a new era, the responsibility lies with both the government and the people to seize this moment. The triumph of unity over division is not just a political achievement but a moral victory for the idea of India-a nation that thrives on diversity and inclusivity. The echoes of this triumph must resonate far and wide, inspiring hope and confidence in the promise of a brighter future for Kashmir and the entire nation. The journey towards lasting peace and integration is far from over, but the steps taken by these Hurriyat groups are a significant leap forward. It is a reminder that even the most entrenched conflicts can be resolved through dialogue, development, and a shared vision of progress. As Amit Shah rightly pointed out, this is a victory for Prime Minister Modi's vision of a developed, peaceful, and unified Bharat. Let this be the beginning of a new chapter for Jammu and Kashmir-one defined by hope, harmony, and collective growth.
