Sonam Wangchuk rushed to AIIMS-Jodhpur following abdominal pain & body ache

JODHPUR, Jan 31: Climate scientist and activist Sonam Wangchuk was rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here following complaints of abdominal pain and body ache on Saturday.
Following complaints from Wangchuk last night, he was rushed to the AIIMS - Jodhpur from the Central Jail in the early hours (around 6:30 am) this morning under police custody.
He was taken to the Emergency, the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department and the Medical OPD where a gastroenterologist and other specialist doctors conducted an intensive medical check up. After staying at the hospital for almost one and a half hours, Wangchuk was escorted back to the jail.
Later, the hospital sources confirmed that the activist was having some gastroenterology related problem.
The well-known activist has been lodged in the jail here for more than four months (since September 27, 2025) under the National Security Act (NSA) following incidents of violence during his agitation in Ladakh.
He had been complaining of indisposition and gastroenterology-related problems for some time.
In the petition filed in the Supreme Court by Wangchuk's wife Geetanjali against his arrest, she has also mentioned the health concerns related to her husband.
The top court has also taken seriously the health issues flagged in the petition and ordered, on Thursday this week, for arranging an intensive medical check up of the undertrial by specialists and the submission of the report before the court by February 2, 2026.
Accordingly, Wangchuk was taken to the AIIMS here on Friday too.
