JAMMU, Feb 26: The Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT), Jammu Bench, has declined to interfere with the suspension orders issued against five employees of the Public Works Department (PWD) who were suspended for arriving 15 minutes late to office.
A Division Bench comprising Judicial Member Rajinder Dogra and Administrative Member Ram Mohan Johri observed that the action was part of a government drive aimed at enforcing punctuality and accountability among public servants towards the general public.
The Bench noted that the suspensions followed a surprise visit by the Deputy Chief Minister, during which the officials were found absent from duty, and held that it would not interfere with such a "positive initiative" of the government.
The tribunal further refused to grant any interim relief, saying courts should be slow to intervene in administrative measures intended to improve efficiency and discipline in public offices.
According to the press note, the suspended officials include Rajinder Chopra, Section Officer, transferred to Doda; Rajinder Sharma, Head Assistant, transferred to Poonch; Mukesh Kumar, Draftsman (Civil), transferred to Kishtwar; Abhishake Saraf, Junior Assistant, transferred to Billawar; and Puneet Gandotra, GSA, transferred to Mahore
The Bench held that the suspension orders did not warrant judicial interference at this stage, reiterating that measures taken in public interest to ensure punctuality and accountability in administration deserve judicial restraint.
