Cop held red-handed taking Rs 15,000 bribe: ACB

Srinagar, May 1: Anti-Corruption Bureau on Friday arrested a police head constable in Srinagar for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000 from a complainant.
ACB said that head constableParvaiz Ahmad Rather, posted in district Srinagar, was caught red-handed while taking the bribe amount. The arrest followed a written complaint received by the ACB alleging that the accused officer had demanded Rs 15,000 to remove the complainant's name from the list of accused in FIR No. 09/2026 registered at Soura Police Station.
"Consequent upon the information and in order to verify the allegations levelled against the said public servant, the matter was discreetly verified through a designated officer of ACB Srinagar. The said accused demanded Rs. 50,000, which was settled at Rs. 15,000 as bribe from the complainant for removing the name of the complainant from the list of accused in case FIR being investigated by the said Head Constable," ACB said.
Based on the contents of the complaint, findings, and recommendations of the verifying officer, the offense under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, is prima facie established against the accused public servant, a resident of SafaporaGanderbal.
Accordingly, a case under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, was registered in Police Station ACB Srinagar on Friday and an investigation has been taken up.
ACB said during the course of investigation, a trap team was constituted for laying a trap wherein said HC was caught red-handed while demanding and accepting the bribe of Rs. 15,000 through cheque from the complainant near District Police Lines Srinagar, and recovery was also effected on the spot. Further investigation into the case is going on, ACB said.
