Fake ‘Intelligence Officers’ caught near Pathankot Air Force Station

CHANDIGARH, May 11: The Punjab Police have apprehended three youths near the high-security Pathankot Air Force Station after they allegedly attempted to impersonate intelligence officials using a forged identity card.
The arrests took place during a special night-checking operation at a barricade near Naushera Nalbanda. According to officials, the suspects were travelling in an i20 car when they were stopped by a team led by ASI Sartaj Singh around 11 pm.
During the initial questioning, the driver identified himself as Constable Sunir Sharma and presented a police identity card, claiming to be on a covert intelligence assignment. However, the situation turned suspicious when the other two occupants failed to produce any valid identification. Upon closer inspection by the officers on duty, the identity card provided by the driver was found to be a sophisticated forgery, prompting the police to take all three individuals into custody.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Vipin Kumar stated that during the subsequent interrogation, the accused confessed that they were not employees of the police department. They revealed that they had found a genuine identity card belonging to a Punjab Police constable near a petrol pump in Hoshiarpur two days prior.
The suspects then devised a plan to use the card to evade toll plaza fees and bypass police checkpoints without being questioned.
The police have seized the fake ID and the vehicle used in the crime.
A formal case has been registered against the trio under relevant sections for cheating and impersonating a public servant. DSP Kumar further added that authorities are reaching out to the Amritsar Police Line to gather information regarding the actual Constable Sunir Sharma, whose name was misused on the forged document. The suspects, who hail from Hoshiarpur, remain in custody as the investigation continues to determine if they are linked to any other criminal activities.
