NIA court sends five LeT module accused to 25-day judicial custody

JAMMU, May 11: A special NIA court here on Monday remanded five accused, including two Pakistani nationals, to 25 days' judicial custody in connection with a case linked to an alleged Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terror module.
Special Judge under the NIA Act, Jammu, Prem Sagar passed the order in case RC-02/2026/NIA/JMU registered under provisions of the Arms Act, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and Explosive Substances Act.
The accused were identified as Mohd Naqeeb Bhat of Hazratbal Srinagar, Adil Rashid Bhat of Syepora Hamchi in Srinagar, Ghulam Mohd Mir alias Mama Gas of Danihama in Srinagar, Abu Huraira alias Kamran Ahmad alias Abdulla Rajput of Kasur in Pakistan and Khubaib alias Usman alias Hilal Ahmed alias Hilal Ahmed Bania of Lahore in Pakistan.
They were produced before the court through video conferencing by NIA Deputy Superintendent of Police Amit Sharma.
The NIA sought judicial custody of the accused for 30 days.
After perusing the case diary and hearing the submissions of the investigating officer, the court observed that the accused were prima facie involved in offences punishable under Sections 7/27 of the Arms Act, Section 23 of the UAPA and Section 4 of the Explosive Substances Act.
The case surfaced after security agencies arrested the five accused, including the two Pakistani nationals, in connection with alleged terror activities and a suspected logistics support network linked to an interstate LeT module.
The accused were earlier remanded to NIA custody for interrogation during which the agency examined their alleged role, cross-border links and suspected involvement in the module.
The investigating officer submitted before the court that investigation in the case was still in progress but further police custody of the accused was no longer required.
The court accordingly remanded accused Nos. 1 to 4 to judicial custody till June 4 and directed that they be lodged in District Jail, Amphalla, Jammu.
Accused No. 5 was also remanded to judicial custody till the same date and ordered to be lodged in Central Jail, Kot Bhalwal, Jammu.
Since two of the accused are Pakistani nationals, the court apprised them of their right to be defended by legal practitioners of their choice.
The court recorded that they had no complaints and directed legal aid counsel Anil Sharma to provide legal assistance to them.
The court also directed the jail authorities to produce the accused before the competent court on expiry of the remand period.
The investigating officer was directed to follow the guidelines laid down in the D.K. Basu case, while the accused were ordered to undergo medical examination after every 48 hours as per rules.
