HC enhances pecuniary jurisdiction of civil courts in J&K, Ladakh; new limits effective from June 1

Jammu, May 16: The High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh has revised the pecuniary jurisdiction of subordinate civil courts, increasing the monetary limits for civil suits to be entertained by Civil Judges Junior Division and Civil Judges Senior Division across the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
According to a notification issued by the office of the Registrar General, all Civil Judges Senior Division have been empowered to hear civil suits with valuation of up to Rs 20 lakh, within their territorial jurisdiction.
Similarly, Civil Judges Junior Division will now have jurisdiction to hear civil suits valued up to Rs 5 lakh within their respective local limits.
The revised pecuniary limits have been notified under Section 21 of the Jammu and Kashmir Civil Courts Act, 1977, and supersede earlier notifications governing monetary jurisdiction of civil courts.
The new jurisdictional limits will come into effect prospectively from June 1, 2026, the notification said.
The High Court clarified that pending cases as on May 31, 2026, will continue before the courts where they are presently being heard, irrespective of the revised pecuniary thresholds.
The notification, numbered 1303 of 2026/RG, has been issued by M.K. Sharma, Registrar General, High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
