Srinagar, May 16: The Jammu and Kashmir government has approved major urban sanitation and waste management projects worth nearly Rs 433 crore for Srinagar, Baramulla and Rajouri to strengthen solid waste and used-water management infrastructure across the Union Territory.
The projects were cleared by the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah-led Council of Ministers and are aimed at improving sanitation, protecting public health and promoting sustainable urban development.
The biggest project among them is an 800 Tonnes Per Day Integrated Solid Waste Management facility at the Saidpora Achan dump yard in Srinagar, to be developed under the Public-Private Partnership mode at an estimated cost of Rs 361 crore.
Officials said Srinagar generates nearly 600 tonnes of municipal waste daily and the project has been planned to meet both present and future requirements of the city. The facility is expected to reduce open dumping, foul smell, pest infestation and other environmental hazards.
The Council of Ministers also approved a used-water management project for Baramulla at an estimated cost of Rs 37.96 crore and a similar project for Rajouri costing Rs 34.43 crore.
The two projects will include interception and diversion of wastewater, sewage pumping stations, sewage treatment plants and septage treatment facilities using advanced technology.
According to the government, the projects will help reduce pollution, improve sanitation, safeguard public health and enhance the overall quality of life in the urban areas.
