Jammu, May 19: The Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) on Tuesday organised menstrual hygiene and health awareness workshops for female students at Government Girls High School, City Chowk and Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Bazar Qasaban, as part of Phase-II of the Swachhta Internship Programme.
The sessions were conducted by Dr Shahid Hussain, Health Officer, JMC, focusing on menstrual hygiene management, adolescent health, sanitation practices and addressing social stigma associated with menstruation.
During the interaction, students were sensitised about maintaining hygiene during menstruation to prevent infections and improve overall health. The speaker also discussed common myths and misconceptions surrounding menstruation, encouraging students to reject social taboos and view menstruation as a natural biological process. The sessions further covered medical aspects related to menstrual health, including irregular cycles, the importance of seeking timely medical advice and the role of balanced nutrition in maintaining reproductive health.
A significant part of the programme focused on safe disposal of sanitary waste and its impact on environmental cleanliness. Students were informed about appropriate methods for disposing of used sanitary pads to prevent unhygienic conditions and drainage blockages.
The Health Officer also highlighted the importance of source segregation of waste, explaining the use of colour-coded dustbins, including the red dustbin designated for sanitary waste disposal.
According to officials, the Swachhta Internship Programme is a month-long capacity-building initiative launched by the Jammu Municipal Corporation under Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0, aimed at promoting awareness on sanitation, environmental responsibility and public health among youth.
