Leh, May 26: Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena on Tuesday participated in celebrations marking the formation of Sham district in Ladakh and said the creation of the new administrative unit would strengthen governance, generate employment opportunities and accelerate development in the western region of the Union Territory.
Saxena visited Khaltse, the headquarters of the newly-created district, in his first visit to Sham after its formation. He received a traditional welcome from villagers, public representatives, students, cultural groups and members of civil society amid enthusiastic public participation and cultural performances. Sham district was created following the Lieutenant Governor's approval on April 27 for the formation of five new districts in Ladakh. The district comprises 27 revenue villages, including five from Kargil district and 22 from Leh district.
Addressing the gathering, Saxena congratulated the people on the fulfilment of their long-pending demand and said the decision reflected the Centre's commitment to the development of Ladakh and border regions.
He said the creation of the district would bring governance and public services closer to people and ensure faster delivery of services.
"The new district will serve as a bridge between the administration and the public and ensure more responsive governance," he said.
Referring to Sham as Ladakh's "Apricot Valley", Saxena said the GI-tagged "Raktsey Karpo" apricot variety grown in the region had gained access to international markets.
He said nearly 1,000 metric tonnes of fresh apricots are expected to be exported this season, calling it a significant milestone for Ladakh's horticulture sector.
The administration, he said, would support packaging, branding and marketing of apricots through institutional partnerships to improve returns for farmers.
Saxena also said that during his recent interaction with Union Minister for Food Processing Industries Chirag Paswan, support had been assured for setting up food processing units and strengthening the horticulture sector in Ladakh.
He said the initiatives would benefit farmers in Sham, who are among the region's major producers of apricots and apples.
