JAMMU, May 30: Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC) Provincial President Rattan Lal Gupta on Saturday accused certain local BJP leaders of attempting to undermine the democratically elected government in Jammu and Kashmir for political gains and urged the Centre to respect the people's mandate.
Addressing a one-day convention of district presidents and party functionaries of the SC Cell at Sher-e-Kashmir Bhavan here, Gupta alleged that some BJP leaders were creating unnecessary confrontation and political uncertainty in the Union Territory to satisfy their "hunger for power".
He said the people of Jammu and Kashmir had given a clear mandate in favour of the elected government and any attempt to weaken or destabilise it amounted to disrespecting the democratic will of the people.
Gupta alleged that some BJP leaders were trying to please their political leadership by continuously targeting the government and creating hurdles in governance.
"Such actions are not only undemocratic but also harmful to the interests of the people who voted in large numbers with hopes of peace, development and restoration of democratic rights," he said.
The NC leader said Jammu and Kashmir had suffered due to prolonged political uncertainty and stressed that the mandate of the people must be respected.
He also called upon the Centre to fulfil its commitment regarding the restoration of statehood to the Union Territory without further delay.
Gupta said Jammu and Kashmir required development, employment generation, infrastructure growth and effective governance rather than political confrontations.
He warned that any attempt to subvert the people's mandate for narrow political interests would be opposed by democratic forces and appealed to all political parties to work collectively for strengthening democratic institutions and safeguarding the rights and aspirations of the people.
