JAMMU, Jun 4: National Conference Provincial President for Jammu, Rattan Lal Gupta, on Thursday said the party's decision to hold a protest in New Delhi on the opening day of the forthcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament for restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir is a significant step in the democratic struggle of the people.
Addressing a joining programme at Sher-e-Kashmir Bhavan here, Gupta said restoration of statehood is not merely a political demand but a constitutional and democratic right of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
The programme was organised by senior party leader Vijay Laxmi Datta.
Gupta said the continued denial of statehood has deprived the people of their full democratic rights and weakened the federal structure envisaged in the Constitution.
He described the proposed protest by National Conference legislators in the national capital as unprecedented and said it should serve as a wake-up call for the Union Government.
"It is deeply concerning that legislators belonging to a democratically elected ruling party are compelled to protest for the restoration of the democratic rights of their own people," he said.
Gupta claimed that the people of Jammu and Kashmir have repeatedly expressed their aspirations for restoration of statehood and pointed out that assurances regarding the same had been made by the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister on several occasions, including before Parliament and the Supreme Court.
He said the delay in restoring statehood has led to disappointment among the people and reiterated that the National Conference believes democracy flourishes when the mandate of the people is respected.
The NC leader urged the Government of India to fulfil its commitment and restore full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir without further delay.
On the occasion, several social activists and women workers joined the National Conference. Those who joined the party included Rani Devi, Madhu Devi, Kanta Devi, Slochana, Arti Sharma, Megha Bhagat, Tanu Bhagat, Shivani Suri, Rajni Bala and Khushbu.
