GCW Gandhi Nagar launches summer internship on Indian Knowledge Systems

JAMMU, Jun 5: Padma Shri Padma Sachdev Government Degree College for Women (GCW), Gandhi Nagar, in collaboration with the Jammu and Kashmir Shri Kashi Vidvat Parishad, on Friday inaugurated a Summer Skill Training Camp on "The Relevance of Astrology, Vastu and Dharmashastra in the Modern Era".
The 15-day internship programme, which will continue till June 19, has been organised by the Department of Sanskrit with the objective of promoting Indian Knowledge Systems and providing students practical exposure to traditional disciplines rooted in India's cultural heritage.
The programme aims to impart training in Panchanga studies, basic astrological calculations, principles of Vastu Shastra, Dharmashastra traditions and rituals, Sanskrit language skills, research methodology and various aspects of Indian culture and heritage.
Principal Prof. (Dr.) Kulvinder Kaur attended the inaugural session as the chief guest, while noted Sanskrit scholar and Padma Shri awardee Prof. Vishwamurti Shastri presided over the function. The proceedings were conducted by Dr. Vijender Kumar, General Secretary of the Jammu and Kashmir Shri Kashi Vidvat Parishad. The event began with Vedic chanting, Saraswati Vandana and the ceremonial lighting of the lamp. In his welcome address, Dr. Vijender Kumar said the internship would focus on experiential learning through practical demonstrations, interactive sessions, project work and skill-development activities rather than remaining confined to classroom lectures.
Addressing the participants, Prof. Kulvinder Kaur stressed the importance of integrating Indian Knowledge Systems into mainstream education in line with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP).
She said Sanskrit serves as a gateway to India's vast intellectual and cultural heritage and encouraged students to actively participate in the programme.
Prof. Bharat Bhushan Sharma, Vice-President of the Parishad, highlighted the continuing relevance of disciplines such as Astrology, Vastu and Dharmashastra, describing them as important components of India's cultural and intellectual traditions.
Prof. Surinder Parihar emphasised the practical applicability of traditional knowledge in contemporary society and said meaningful education requires a balance between theoretical understanding and skill development.
In his presidential address, Prof. Vishwamurti Shastri spoke about the significance of India's ancient knowledge traditions and said subjects such as Astrology, Vastu and Dharmashastra seek to establish harmony between individuals, society and nature.
