Jammu, Jul 8: Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister and National Conference leader Surinder Choudhary on Wednesday said the restoration of statehood has become the foremost demand of the people and urged them to participate in the party's proposed "Delhi Chalo" protest at Jantar Mantar on July 20.
Addressing public meetings at Udhampur and Katra, Choudhary said the Centre should fulfil its commitment to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir without further delay.
He said the completion of the delimitation exercise and the conduct of Assembly elections had addressed the conditions cited by the Centre, adding that the promise of restoring statehood should now be implemented.
Choudhary said Jammu and Kashmir's unique administrative and geographical requirements warranted restoration of full statehood,
asserting that the people deserved an elected government with adequate powers.
He described the restoration of statehood as a constitutional commitment and said the aspirations of the people should be respected.
National Conference Provincial President Rattan Lal Gupta called upon party workers and supporters to make the party's proposed rally in Jammu on July 12 a success ahead of the July 20 protest in New Delhi.
Gupta said the party had waited for the restoration of statehood following the Assembly elections and would now intensify its democratic campaign on the issue.
He said the July 12 rally would mobilise party workers and elected representatives for the "Delhi Chalo" programme and reiterate the demand for restoration of statehood.
The meetings were attended by several party leaders and workers, including Akash Verma, Javid Iqbal, Rafiq Mohammad, Sardar Gurmeet Singh,
Choudhary Abdul Rashid, Dr. Jatinder Prashar, Prabha Devi, Ghulam Hassan Kant, Inder Prakash, Satish Walia and Raj Kumar Sharma, among others.
