HC seeks action taken report on 98 proposed fire stations, including Manjakote

JAMMU, Jul 15: The High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh has directed the Union Territory Government to file a detailed affidavit within four weeks explaining the action taken on a proposal for establishment of 98 new Fire and Emergency Service Stations, including one at Manjakote in Rajouri district.
The direction was issued by a Division Bench of Acting Chief Justice Sanjeev Kumar and Justice Mohd Yousuf Wani while hearing a Public Interest Litigation filed by Advocate Mohd Rahoof Khan, seeking establishment of a Fire and Emergency Service Station in Tehsil Manjakote.
The Bench noted that the Director, Fire and Emergency Services had, through a communication dated June 23, 2021, recommended establishment of 98 new fire stations across the Union Territory, with the proposed Manjakote station also figuring in the recommendation.
The Court was informed that the proposal was pending consideration before the Administrative Department, as the final decision involved financial implications and fulfilment of other prerequisites.
Appearing for the government, Senior Additional Advocate General Monika Kohli, assisted by Advocate Anuj Datta, sought time to place a detailed affidavit on record.
Granting four weeks' time, the Division Bench directed the Commissioner Secretary, Home Department, to file an affidavit indicating the action taken on the recommendation pending since 2021 and listed the matter for further hearing on September 9, 2026.
