JKNC seeks Rs 5,000 crore interim relief package for flood-hit J&K

JAMMU, Jul 24: Jammu and Kashmir Nat-ional Conference (JKNC) Prov-incial President for Jammu Adv. Rattan Lal Gupta on Friday urged the Centre to immediately sanction an interim relief package of Rs 5,000 crore for people affected by the recent floods, flash floods, cloudbursts and landslides across Jammu and Kashmir.
Expressing grief over the loss of lives and widespread damage caused by the natural calamity, Gupta said nearly 26 people had reportedly lost their lives, while thousands of families suffered damage to houses, agricultural land, livestock, roads, bridges and other public infrastructure.
He said the losses ran into several thousand crores of rupees and called for immediate intervention by the Central Government to support relief and rehabilitation efforts.
Gupta demanded that the Union Government release an interim package of Rs 5,000 crore to provide immediate assistance to the affected people, restore damaged infrastructure and facilitate rehabilitation.
He also urged the Centre to depute an inter-ministerial team to assess the extent of the damage and ensure early release of adequate financial assistance.
The JKNC leader appealed to both the Central and Jammu and Kashmir Governments to provide immediate ex gratia to the families of those who lost their lives, rehabilitate displaced families and extend financial assistance to farmers, traders and other affected sections to help them rebuild their livelihoods.
Calling for a united response, Gupta said politics should be kept aside and every effort should be made to ensure timely relief and rehabilitation for the affected population.
Describing the devastation in Rajouri and Poonch districts as severe, he urged the Centre to declare the calamity a national disaster and extend all possible assistance for reconstruction and recovery.
Gupta also lauded the Omar Abdullah-led Jammu and Kashmir Government for its prompt response to the flood situation, saying the administration acted swiftly by deploying rescue teams, senior officials and relief machinery to the affected areas. He appreciated the Chief Minister for personally monitoring the relief and rescue operations.
