Pathania criticises slow pace of flood relief, reviews landslide situation in Udhampur

UDHAMPUR, Jun 26: Udhampur East MLA Ranbir Singh Pathania on Thursday criticised the administration over what he termed the "snail's pace" of relief and rehabilitation measures for disaster-affected families and called for immediate scientific intervention in landslide-prone areas.
Pathania conducted an extensive visit to landslide-affected areas, with special focus on Sundla village in Majalta tehsil, where land subsidence first reported in September 2025 has again become active during the current monsoon season.
Accompanied by officers of the Revenue Department, PMGSY, Jal Shakti, Power Develo-pment Department, Irriga-tion and Flood Control Department, Health, Agriculture and Rural Development departments, besides local representatives and residents, the MLA inspected the affected areas. A review meeting was subsequently held at Panchayat Ghar, Sundla. Pathania said nearly 1,000 kanals of land were affected by extensive subsidence in September last year, damaging houses, agricultural land, roads, drinking water infrastructure, electricity networks and other public assets and forcing several families to move to temporary shelters.
Expressing concern over the pace of rehabilitation, he said that despite repeated assurances, eligible affected families were yet to receive the promised five marlas of land for rehabilitation.
"It is unfortunate that despite repeated assurances, not even a single eligible affected family has been allotted the promised five marlas of land for rehabilitation," he said, urging the administration to expedite the process.
Pathania said some families were still living in temporary tents and demanded fresh tents, relief material and safer temporary accommodation until their permanent rehabilitation.
He also maintained that beneficiaries receiving assistance under the State Disaster Response Fund should not be denied benefits under PMAY-G/Awaas Plus, saying disaster relief could not substitute permanent housing assistance.
