Mother-son arrested for murder after body found in Srinagar canal

Srinagar, Aug 1: Police on Saturday said it had cracked a blind murder case within six hours of recovering a body from a canal in Srinagar's Khanyar area, arresting a woman and her son in connection with the killing.
Police said that on July 30, Police Station Khanyar received information about an unidentified body wrapped in gunny bags lying in the Babademb Canal beneath Baba Dawood Khakhi Bridge. Subsequently, an FIR under Sections 103 and 238 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) was registered and an investigation launched.
Considering the gravity of the case, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was constituted under the supervision of senior officers.
Police said through sustained investigation and corroboration of evidence, police identified the accused as HaleemaBano and her son Moomin Ahmad, originally from Machil in Kupwara district and currently residing as tenants at Mughal Mohalla, Rainawari.
Police said the accused fled Srinagar after the crime in an attempt to evade arrest. However, the investigation team followed available leads and traced and apprehended them from Lolab, Kupwara, within hours.
The deceased was identified as Nazir Ahmad Bhat, a resident of Kalantpora, Hawal.
Investigation revealed that Bhat was allegedly murdered inside the accused's rented accommodation following a financial dispute. His body was later dumped in the Babademb Canal to conceal the crime and destroy evidence. Several incriminating articles have been recovered, while further investigation is underway to ascertain the involvement of any other person.
