Jammu, Aug 7: BJP MLA from Jammu East Yudhvir Sethi on Friday joined residents of Ward No. 16 in a protest against the Power Development Department (PDD) over electricity disconnections and alleged inflated power bills, leading to a temporary blockade of the New Plot-Janipur main road.
The protesters alleged that the department had disconnected electricity connections of several consumers in the locality following the recent suspension of two PDD employees, prompting residents to stage a demonstration.
On reaching the protest site, Sethi joined the residents and accused the department of harassing consumers despite claims of providing uninterrupted power supply.
Former corporator Dinesh Gupta, former Ward No. 8 corporator Dr. Akshay Sharma, Advocate Nidhi Magotra, BJP District Spokesperson Raman Sharma, Pooja Sharma, Majid Khan and several BJP workers also participated in the protest.
Addressing the gathering, Sethi alleged that consumers were facing power cuts lasting six to eight hours daily while also receiving hefty electricity bills. He demanded immediate restoration of disconnected electricity connections, fair billing and regular power supply.
The BJP MLA also accused the National Conference-Congress government of failing to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply in Jammu and said prolonged outages were affecting households, students, senior citizens, businesses and normal life.
He criticised the Power Development Department for failing to resolve the recurring electricity crisis despite repeated complaints from residents and urged the authorities to take immediate corrective measures.
Residents said frequent power cuts had disrupted their daily routine, affected business activities and caused hardship during the prevailing weather conditions. They appealed to the administration to resolve the issue without further delay.
