Security tightened ahead of Independence Day, Budha Amarnath Yatra

JAMMU, Aug 7: Security forces intensified surveillance across parts of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday by conducting search operations, long-range patrols and an anti-terror mock drill ahead of Independence Day celebrations and the annual Shri Budha Amarnath Yatra.
In Jammu district, police, along with Village Defence Guard (VDG) members, carried out a cordon and search operation and long-range patrol under the jurisdiction of Police Post Chowki Choura. The operation covered the Gala-Thorni stretch, including the villages of Miyari, Juthal and Amb.
Officials said the area was thoroughly searched, but no suspicious person or incriminating material was found during the operation, which concluded peacefully.
Police personnel also interacted with residents of Thorni village and urged them to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious persons, activities or objects to the nearest police station. Officials emphasised the importance of public cooperation in maintaining peace and security ahead of Independence Day.
Meanwhile, security forces and emergency response agencies conducted a joint anti-terror mock drill at Bagnoti Rajal in the Nowshera sector of Rajouri district to test preparedness ahead of the Shri Budha Amarnath Yatra, scheduled to commence on August 17.
The exercise simulated a terrorist attack on the Jammu-Rajouri-Poonch National Highway. During the drill, two mock terrorists were shown attacking the highway before security personnel swiftly responded, neutralised the simulated threat and secured the area.
The exercise involved the Jammu and Kashmir Police, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), Fire and Emergency Services, and the Health Department. The participating agencies rehearsed coordinated responses, including rapid deployment, area sanitisation, casualty evacuation and emergency management.
Officials said the drill was aimed at strengthening inter-agency coordination and enhancing operational preparedness to deal with any terror-related contingency during the annual pilgrimage, which passes through the Jammu-Rajouri-Poonch axis. They said elaborate security arrangements have been put in place to ensure the safety of pilgrims and maintain smooth movement along the yatra route.
