Ownership rights, compensation among issues raised with Rajnath Singh

NEW DELHI, Aug 7: Jammu and Kashmir BJP President and Rajya Sabha MP Sat Sharma, accompan-ied by BJP National General Secretary, J&K Prabhari and MP Tarun Chugh, on Friday met Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and raised issues concerning residents living along the International Border.
During the meeting, Sharma sought permanent ownership rights for refugees of the 1965 and 1971 conflicts who have been residing in border areas for decades and urged the Centre to address their long-pending land and property issues.
He also demanded fair and adequate compensation for agricultural land acquired by the Border Security Force (BSF) for the construction of border roads, fencing, bunkers and other defence infrastructure, saying the acquisition had affected the livelihoods of many farming families.
The BJP leader further urged the Defence Minister to constitute a joint team of senior officers from the Revenue Department and defence authorities to conduct an on-ground assessment of the affected villages and recommend time-bound solutions for the issues faced by border residents.
Sharma said the people living along the International Border have made immense sacrifices in the interest of national security and deserve justice, dignity, security and sustained developmental support.
Tarun Chugh said the Narendra Modi-led government has consistently remained committed to the welfare and security of border residents and expressed confidence that their genuine concerns would receive due attention.
Rajnath Singh gave a patient hearing to the issues raised and assured the delegation that the concerns of border residents would be examined seriously. He said the Government of India remains committed to safeguarding national security while ensuring the welfare of people living in border areas and that appropriate decisions would be taken after due consideration.
