One arrested after SUV evades security checkpoint in Ramban; no terror angle found

JAMMU, Aug 7: Police have arrested one person and ruled out any terror angle after an SUV evaded a security checkpoint on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in Ramban district in the early hours of Friday, officials said.
The incident occurred around 3.30 am when a Scorpio SUV travelling from Srinagar towards Jammu reached the police checkpoint at Kunfer in the Chanderkote area. Despite repeated signals to stop, the driver allegedly accelerated the vehicle and attempted to run over the naka personnel before fleeing towards the Nashri area.
Sensing an imminent threat to the lives of the security personnel, the guard on duty, Constable Rasal Chand, fired three rounds from his service rifle in an attempt to intercept the vehicle. However, the occupants managed to escape.
An FIR was registered and a massive search operation involving Ramban Police, the Special Operations Group (SOG), the CRPF and the Army was launched to trace the vehicle and apprehend the accused.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Ramban, Arun Gupta, said the Scorpio was later recovered and seized near Dalwas, while forensic evidence was collected from the scene by the District Mobile Forensic Unit and the investigating team.
During the operation, police arrested one of the three accused, identified as Altaf Mohammad, a resident of Krimchi, Mansar in Udhampur district.
Police said teams have been constituted to trace the two remaining accused, and assistance has been sought from Udhampur Police for their arrest.
Officials said preliminary investigation has not revealed any terror angle in the incident. They added that the motive behind the attempt to evade the checkpoint is being investigated and further details will be shared as the probe progresses.
