Security forces intensify operations in Jammu ahead of Independence Day

JAMMU, Aug 11: Security forces intensified security and area domination measures across Jammu ahead of Independence Day, with long-range patrolling and an anti-terror mock drill conducted in Samba and a joint search operation launched in the forests of Poonch following suspected movement, officials said on Tuesday.
In Samba, the Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police conducted a nearly 20-km-long-range patrol from Jatwal to Lala Chak along the Jammu-Pathankot National Highway, a police spokesman said.
The patrolling was followed by an anti-terror mock drill at the border police post in Lala Chak to assess the preparedness of security personnel to respond to a simulated terror attack.
During the exercise, two simulated terrorists were shown carrying out an attack on an establishment. SOG personnel immediately established a cordon around the area and neutralised the simulated threat, the spokesman said.
The exercise was aimed at assessing the response mechanism, coordination, tactical preparedness and contingency-handling capabilities of the personnel.
Samba Senior Superintendent of Police Anuj Kumar reiterated the police commitment to maintaining robust security arrangements and ensuring the safety of the public, particularly in view of the upcoming Independence Day celebrations.
Meanwhile, in Poonch district, security forces launched a joint search operation in the Mendhar sector after suspicious movement was noticed near a tunnel under construction.
A security guard deployed at the construction site noticed the movement and fired three to four rounds as a precautionary measure, officials said.
No loss of life or damage to property was reported.
Following the incident, personnel of the police, SOG and CRPF launched a joint search operation around 6 am in the forest areas of Bhatadurian, Sangiot and adjoining areas.
The search operation was underway and further details were awaited.
