Multi-layered security arrangements in place across Kashmir ahead of I-Day

SRINAGAR, Aug 11: Ahead of the Independence Day celebrations on August 15, multi-layered security arrangements have been put in place across Srinagar and other parts of the Kashmir Valley.
In Srinagar, where Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is scheduled to unfurl the national flag at Bakshi Stadium, security forces have significantly strengthened the security grid around the venue and its adjoining areas.
Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, V K Birdi said on Tuesday said elaborate security arrangements were being made not only at the main venue but also across the city and in various districts of the Valley to ensure smooth conduct of the Independence Day functions.
"As you know, on 15th August, the main function of Srinagar is going to be held. For that, security arrangements and parade preparations are going on. Full dress rehearsals are being organized so that the main function of 15th August in Srinagar can be completed well," Birdi told reporters.
He said the Jammu and Kashmir Police had put in place multi-layered security arrangements across the Valley.
"Jammu Kashmir Police, not only in Srinagar, but also in different districts of the Valley, there are multi-layered security arrangements. These arrangements are not only on venues, but also around the city. So, the arrangements will be the same this time as well," the IGP said.
Asked about any leads regarding possible terror attacks or other threats in the wake of recent incidents in South Kashmir, Birdi said it would not be appropriate to disclose details as the matter was under investigation.
"Look, it's a matter of investigation. So, I don't think it's appropriate to reveal it now. Whenever there are such things that will be shared with you, we will share it with you at the right time," he said.
On the police's message for the public during the Independence Day celebrations, Birdi said the occasion belonged to the people and urged citizens to participate in the celebrations in large numbers.
"Look, this is the function of the public. The police work as a helper or organizer in this. And since this is the function of the public, we ask people to participate in this function in large numbers and make it successful," the IGP said.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday security agencies intensified anti-sabotage checks, area domination exercises, surveillance and frisking operations across Srinagar as part of heightened security measures to prevent any attempt to disrupt the Independence Day celebrations.
Two-wheelers were being seen stopped at several checkpoints and riders subjected to identity verification and frisking.
