IIM Jammu observes Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, pays tribute to victims and survivors

JAMMU, Aug 14: The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Jammu observed Partition Horrors Remembrance Day with a solemn programme dedicated to remembering the suffering, sacrifices and resilience of millions affected by the Partition of India.
The programme was presided over by Prof. (Dr.) Brigadier (Retd.) Neeraj Soni, Chairperson, Student Affairs, IIM Jammu, in the presence of Prof. Shyam Narayan Lal, Chairperson, Anandam; Prof. Pranab Ranjan Das, Chairperson, Small Business Development Units; and Prof. Ravij Seth, Professor of Practice. Faculty members, officers, staff and students also participated.
Prof. Shyam Narayan Lal delivered an address highlighting the human tragedy and lasting legacy of Partition.
Through literary references, anecdotes and a pictorial presentation, he recalled the devastation, displacement, violence and separation experienced by millions, particularly in Punjab.
Referring to Khushwant Singh's "Train to Pakistan" and accounts of the "Khooni Trains", Lal said literature and collective memory continued to preserve the experiences of a generation that witnessed the upheaval.
He emphasised that Partition was not merely a historical event but a profound human tragedy and said the stories and sacrifices of millions should not be forgotten. He called upon the younger generation to observe the day with sensitivity and reflection and draw lessons from the past to strengthen peace, unity, harmony and national solidarity.
Prof. (Dr.) Brigadier Neeraj Soni, in his address, urged students to remember Partition not only through the lens of pain and devastation but also through stories of courage, sacrifice and resilience.
Drawing upon the Bhagavad Gita and the teachings of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, he highlighted the values of courage, duty, faith and selfless service. He said countless stories of determination and human courage emerged from the difficult period of Partition.
Calling upon youth to play their role as future decision-makers and nation-builders, Soni urged them to transform remembrance into responsibility and work towards building a stronger, united and enlightened India.
