US Ambassador Sergio Gor to visit Kashmir on Wednesday

SRINAGAR, Aug 18: US Ambassador to India and Special Envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gor is scheduled to visit Kashmir on Wednesday, in his first trip to Jammu and Kashmir since assuming office earlier this year.
According to official sources, Gor is expected to arrive in Srinagar on Wednesday afternoon and meet Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah during his stay.
The Ambassador is expected to spend the night in Srinagar before leaving for Ladakh on Thursday, sources said.
The visit will be Gor's maiden trip to Jammu and Kashmir after he took charge as the 27th US Ambassador to India on January 14 this year.
While his official itinerary includes meetings with the Union Territory's top leadership, it is not clear whether he will also meet political leaders, representatives of the business community, civil society or the security establishment.
The visit comes against the backdrop of Jammu and Kashmir's changed political landscape following the 2019 constitutional changes and the subsequent restoration of an elected government in the Union Territory.
There was no official word on the Ambassador's specific engagements in Kashmir.
