SRINAGAR, Aug 20: National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah on Thursday said restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's special status, revoked by the Centre in 2019, remains at the top of the party's agenda and it will never abandon the struggle for it.
In a statement, Abdullah said the special constitutional status accorded to Jammu and Kashmir reflected its distinct and unique constitutional relationship with the Union, a legacy that remained central to the NC's political vision.
Addressing a gathering here, the supremo of the ruling NC said even though the constitutional provisions relating to Jammu and Kashmir had been "altered unilaterally", his party would continue its struggle for its restoration.
"The issue remains at the top of the party's agenda. The people of Jammu and Kashmir have a right to raise their voice for restoration of their constitutional rights," he said.
The three-time chief minister said his party had repeatedly stated at its meetings, rallies and conventions that it would fulfil the promises made to the people and would never retreat from its position.
Abdullah said Jammu and Kashmir's present circumstances required an elected government with a strong mandate and all necessary powers to address people's problems and ensure development and good governance.
Asserting that political institutions must respect the aspirations of the people and that their voices should be heard, the NC chief stressed the need to strengthen democratic institutions and protect the rights of the people.
He also appealed to political workers and the public to remain united and work towards strengthening peace, social harmony and development.
