JAMMU, Aug 20: Security has been intensified along the Jammu-Rajouri-Poonch highway in view of the ongoing Budha Amarnath Yatra, while security forces also launched a search operation in the bordering areas of Kathua district following reports of suspicious movement, officials said on Thursday.
With pilgrim convoys travelling along the highway, the Jammu and Kashmir Police, Central Armed Police Forces and Army have stepped up security and area domination measures along the route.
Dozens of temporary checkpoints have been established for traffic regulation and enhanced surveillance, while Army units are providing security cover to the vital highway.
Road Opening Parties are conducting inspections of vulnerable stretches to detect any possible threat or suspicious activity before the movement of pilgrim convoys.
The Budha Amarnath Yatra, which was flagged off by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on August 17, will continue till August 28.
Meanwhile, security forces launched a search operation in forest areas near the Udhampur-Kathua border in the Billawar belt following reports of suspicious movement.
According to locals, unidentified persons allegedly knocked on the door of a house in a village late Wednesday night. The family did not open the door but noticed the next day that food kept inside the house was missing, raising suspicion that someone had entered the premises.
Kathua Superintendent of Police (Operations) Pritpal Singh said routine operations were being conducted to maintain alertness in the border areas.
"Regarding the suspicious activity reported, yes, this is a bordering area, so keeping that in mind, we are carrying out this operation," he said.
