Akhnoor, Aug 22: Akhnoor MLA Mohan Lal Bhagat on Saturday laid the foundation stone for the first phase of a road project from the 5th kilometre of the Akhnoor-Sumah Road to Aap Shambhu Mahadev Mandir at Shiv Keri in Sungal area.
The first phase of the project has been sanctioned at an estimated cost of Rs. 3.38 crore and is aimed at improving connectivity to the religious destination and benefiting pilgrims and local residents.
Senior Public Works Department officers, local representatives, BJP functionaries and prominent citizens attended the foundation stone laying ceremony.
Former Sarpanch Ashwani Sharma said the MLA had taken note of the poor condition of the road during visits to the temple and directed the authorities to prepare a Detailed Project Report for improving connectivity.
He said the project was approved within about a year and its commencement marked an important development for Sungal. Shiv Keri, he added, had emerged as an important religious destination attracting devotees from across the Jammu region.
Sharma said the larger road project would also facilitate development of link roads in surrounding areas. He highlighted other development works undertaken in Sungal, including Rs. 78 lakh sanctioned for Government High School Sungal, Rs. 8 lakh for a cricket top box and Rs. 5 lakh from the MLA's Constituency Development Fund for a library.
Addressing the gathering, Mohan Lal Bhagat said balanced development across the Akhnoor Assembly constituency was his priority in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of "Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas".
He said strengthening the road network, particularly in rural areas, was essential for socio-economic development and for ensuring better access to education, healthcare and other basic facilities.
