SRINAGAR, Aug 23: Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma on Sunday accused Chief Minister Omar Abdullah of not liking the opposition and said the BJP would raise public issues and present its work during the upcoming Assembly session.
Sharma was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a BJP state office-bearers' meeting in Srinagar, attended by Union Minister Jitendra Singh.
"The BJP meeting taking place here today is extremely important. We have invited party office-bearers from every region of Jammu and Kashmir to discuss the public issues that will be raised during the upcoming Assembly session," Sharma said.
He said the meeting would also discuss the party's strategy for the session and other issues concerning the people.
Referring to Abdullah's remarks on Saturday, Sharma said, "Omar Abdullah spoke yesterday, and I welcome that, please ask whatever you wish. We will present our role and our work before you. It is certainly true that the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir does not like the opposition."
J&K Waqf Board Chairperson and Minister of State Syed Darakhshan Andrabi, while defending the role of the opposition, said it would continue to perform its constitutional role in Parliament and the Assembly.
"The opposition is never happy when someone works hard. The opposition will naturally do its job; there is no point in trying to stop them," Andrabi said.
On US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor's remarks that Jammu and Kashmir is an important part of India, Andrabi said people in the region were happy with their association with the country.
"Pakistan always has one issue or another. But as for our Kashmir, we are happy being with India and we always have been," she said.
The BJP meeting was held ahead of the Assembly session, with party leaders discussing governance and public welfare issues to be raised during the proceedings.
