JAMMU, Aug 23: In a significant development in an 18-year-old narcotics case, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Jammu Zonal Unit, has secured the conviction of an accused who had jumped bail in 2010 and remained beyond the reach of the trial court for several years.
The conviction marks the culmination of a long-pending legal proceeding and underscores the NCB's continued efforts to pursue accused persons who evade the judicial process.
The case relates to NCB Jammu Crime No. 04/2008. On December 3, 2008, the NCB recovered 960 grams of charas from the conscious possession of the accused in the Kashmir Basti area of Jammu, an NCB spokesman said.
According to the agency, the contraband was concealed in a packet kept inside a white polythene bag.
During the trial, the accused, who had been granted bail in 2010, failed to appear before the court, resulting in the proceedings remaining pending for several years.
In a breakthrough, NCB Jammu traced the accused to Amphalla Jail in Jammu and secured his production before the competent court in 2025, bringing him back into the judicial process.
Following sustained legal proceedings, the Court of Sessions, Special Judge (NDPS Cases), Jammu, on August 11, 2026, sentenced Kunnu Bharti alias Abhinandan to three years' imprisonment and imposed a fine of ?10,000.
In default of payment of the fine, Bharti will undergo an additional two months of rigorous imprisonment, the spokesman said.
The court also directed that, before his release, the convict furnish a ?20,000 bond under Section 34 of the NDPS Act, undertaking not to repeat such offences in future.
The conviction marks the conclusion of a case dating back nearly 18 years and demonstrates the NCB Jammu's resolve to pursue drug offenders even when they attempt to evade the judicial process by jumping bail, the spokesman said.
The NCB also appealed to citizens to join the fight against drug trafficking.
