BJP failed to deliver statehood, now trying to undermine elected govt: Gupta

Jammu, Aug 24: Jammu and Kashmir National Conference Provincial President Jammu Rattan Lal Gupta on Monday accused the BJP of failing to fulfil its promise of restoring full-fledged statehood to Jammu and Kashmir and attempting to undermine the elected government.
Addressing party office-bearers and functionaries from Bhalwal block at the party headquarters in Gandhi Nagar, Gupta termed the BJP's core committee meeting a "political drama" aimed at diverting attention from its failure to restore statehood.
Gupta said the BJP had no moral standing to lecture the elected government on democracy while Jammu and Kashmir continued to remain without full-fledged statehood.
"The BJP came to power at the Centre promising restoration of statehood, yet years later Jammu and Kashmir continues to remain without its constitutional status as a full-fledged State," he said.
He questioned why the Centre had not provided a clear roadmap or timeline for restoration of statehood and why, according to him, the elected government was being denied powers that ordinarily belong to a state government.
Gupta said the people of Jammu and Kashmir had given a mandate to the National Conference-led government and accused the BJP of playing a "negative and irresponsible" role in the region's democratic process. He alleged that instead of acting as a constructive Opposition and raising issues concerning the people, the BJP was focusing on creating political instability through what he described as misleading narratives and fabricated allegations against the Omar Abdullah-led government.
