DBPS seeks review of caste-based reservation system, greater focus on economic criteria

Jammu, Aug 24: The Dogra Brahman Pratinidhi Sabha (DBPS) on Monday demanded a review of the existing caste-based reservation system, with greater emphasis on economic backwardness and merit in extending government support and benefits.
Interacting with media persons, DBPS president Ved Parkash Sharma said economic disadvantage, rather than caste alone, should be considered while determining eligibility for government assistance, particularly in education, coaching and scholarships.
Former Deputy Commissioner B.S. Jamwal, DBPS chairman and former Additional Advocate General P.C. Sharma, Bawa Bhair Dev Sathan Trust general secretary Ramesh Sharma and representatives of various social and religious organisations were present on the occasion.
The speakers said financial circumstances should be given due consideration while deciding eligibility for government assistance. They maintained that economically disadvantaged persons, irrespective of caste, should receive support for education, coaching, scholarships and other essential needs.
The DBPS representatives called for a wider debate on the existing reservation framework in view of changing social and economic circumstances. They sought greater benefits for economically weaker sections and demanded a white paper on the outcomes of the reservation system.
They also advocated minimum qualifying standards for educational admissions and suggested quota within quota to ensure that reservation benefits reach the most marginalised sections effectively.
