Six killed, three injured as vehicle falls into ditch in Surankote

JAMMU, Aug 26: Six people, including two women, were killed and three others injured when a vehicle veered off the road and fell into a ditch in Poonch district on Wednesday, officials said.
The accident occur-red at Seri Chouhana village in the Sheldhar area of Surankote around 5.30 pm when the driver of a Maruti Eeco heading towards the village lost control of the vehicle, they said.
"An unfortunate accident occurred this evening, resulting in on-the-spot death of six persons and injuries to three others," Poonch Deputy Commissioner Ashok Kumar Sharma said.
The deceased were identified as Mohd Shafiq (32), Nazakat Hussain (34), Sheraz Ahmed (30), Mohd Fareed (21), Musarat Naz (19) and Zulfat Bi (25).
Five-year-old Irshan Ahmed, along with Mohd Amin (30) and Tahir Ahmed (25), sustained injuries and were shifted to District Hospital Poonch, officials said. The condition of Irshan was stated to be critical and he was referred to Government Medical College hospital for specialised treatment.
Chief Medical Officer Poonch Dr Pervez Khan said information about the accident was received through the police control room, following which the 108 ambulance service, additional ambulances and other emergency resources were immediately dispatched to the spot.
The bodies of the six victims, including four men and two women, were brought to District Hospital Poonch, he said.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed grief over the loss of lives and directed the district administration to provide immediate assistance to the affected families and ensure necessary support to the injured.
"Pained by the loss of lives in a tragic road accident in Poonch. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured," Sinha said in a post on X.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also expressed deep grief over the accident and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families.
He directed the authorities to ensure the best possible medical treatment and care for the injured and extend all possible assistance to the affected families.
The Chief Minister's Office said it was in constant touch with the concerned authorities to coordinate assistance and medical care.
