Congress leaders extend solidarity to protesting medical interns, seek immediate stipend enhancement

JAMMU, Sep 2: Cong-ress leaders on Wednesday visited protesting medical interns in Jammu and extended support to their demand for enhancement of stipend, urging the government to intervene immediately and address their concerns.
The visit was undertaken on the directions of J&K Pradesh Congress Committee President Tariq Hameed Karra. Former J&K minister and President DCC Jammu Urban Yogesh Sawhney, DCC Jammu Rural President Neeraj Kundan and senior Congress leader Th Manmohan Singh interacted with the protesting interns and assured them of the party's support.
During the visit, the Congress delegation also handed over a letter addressed by the J&K Congress to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, urging the government to take appropriate measures for enhancement of the stipend being paid to medical interns.
The Congress leaders said medical interns play an important role in the functioning of hospitals and healthcare institutions, work long hours and shoulder significant responsibilities while undergoing practical training.
Sawhney said the demand for enhancement of stipend was genuine and deserved consideration by the government without further delay.
"These young doctors are not merely seeking a financial benefit; they are asking for recognition of the work and responsibilities they undertake during their internship," he said.
He said the existing stipend needed to be reviewed in view of the increased cost of living and the workload and responsibilities shouldered by interns, particularly those serving in government hospitals.
Sawhney said the Congress delegation had visited the protest site to convey its solidarity with the interns and make it clear that their concerns would continue to be raised at appropriate forums.
He urged the administration to engage with representatives of the interns and work towards an early resolution rather than allowing the protest to continue.
Neeraj Kundan also expressed support for the interns and said their legitimate concerns should be addressed through constructive dialogue and timely government intervention. The Congress leaders assured the protesting interns that the party, under the guidance of JKPCC President Tariq Hameed Karra, would continue to raise their demands at appropriate forums.
