SC Collegium recommends Yash Paul Bourney as J&K and Ladakh HC judge
SC Collegium also approves appointment of judicial officers as judges of Delhi, Jharkhand and Karnataka HCs

NEW DELHI, Sep 10: The Supreme Court Collegium on Thursday approved the appointment of judicial officer Yash Paul Bourney as a judge of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
The Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, took the decision at a meeting held here.
Bourney's appointment comes after the High Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice Arun Palli, had recommended 11 names in April to fill vacancies in the High Court, including 10 advocates from the Bar quota and Bourney from the Bench quota.
The names recommended from the Bar quota were Vishal Sharma, Namgyal Wangchuk, Jahangir Iqbal Ganai, Pawan Kumar Kundal, Tahir Majid Shamshi, Tabasum Zafar, Anupam Raina, Vikram Kumar Sharma, Amit Gupta and Pranav Kohli.
The High Court had undertaken extensive consultations before finalising the recommendations, with the exercise aimed at providing representation to different regions and sections of society.
The High Court is currently functioning with 13 judges against a sanctioned strength of 25, leaving 12 vacancies. The sanctioned strength was increased from 17 to 25 judges in November 2024 to address rising case pendency.
In other decisions, the Supreme Court Collegium approved the elevation of eight judicial officers as judges of the Delhi High Court. They are Gurvinder Pal Singh, Nivedita Anil Sharma, Nisha Sahay Saxena, Sanjay Sharma-I, Bharat Parashar, Aditi Choudhary, Dinesh Bhatt and Arun Bhardwaj.
The Collegium also approved the appointment of judicial officers Manoj Prasad, Akhil Kumar and Ram Sharma as judges of the Jharkhand High Court, and Usharani, K S Bharath Kumar and Nerale Veerabhadraiah Bhavani as judges of the Karnataka High Court.
The Supreme Court Collegium's statement specifically confirmed the approval of Bourney's appointment as a judge of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
