NMIMS Chandigarh wins Surana & Surana Trial Court Advocacy Moot at JU

Justice Nargal stresses preparation, integrity in legal profession

Jammu, Sep 20: NMIMS Chandigarh emerged winner of the Surana&Surana Trial Court Advocacy Moot Court Competition, North Rounds 2026-27, organised by the Department of Law, University of Jammu, in collaboration with Surana & Surana International Attorneys.
The competition was held from September 18 to 20, with 26 teams initially enrolling and 18 qualifying after the screening process.
The semi-final rounds were adjudicated by District and Sessions Judges Sonia Gupta, Director, J&K Judicial Academy; Parvaiz Iqbal, NDPS Court; Tahir Khurshid Raina; CJMs Samriti Sharma and Ajay Sharma; and Special Mobile Magistrate Raj Kumar.
The final round was adjudicated by Justice WasimSadiqNargal, Justice Sanjay Parihar and Senior Additional Advocate General Monika Kohli.
Speaking at the valedictory function, University of Jammu Vice-Chancellor Prof UmeshRai stressed the importance of experiential learning in legal education.
He said moot courts and trial advocacy competitions help students develop practical skills, including constructing arguments, responding to questions and listening to opposing viewpoints.
Prof Rai also emphasised the importance of ethics, empathy, integrity and sound judgment in the legal profession, saying professional success should not be measured merely by winning cases but also by a lawyer's responsibility towards justice and the rule of law.
Justice Wasim Sadiq Nargal appreciated the Department of Law and Surana & Surana International Attorneys for organising the competition and stressed the importance of speedy trials, professional integrity and preparation. He advised young lawyers to maintain patience, perseverance and faith in the justice delivery system.
Justice Sanjay Parihar spoke about his journey in the legal profession and emphasised continuous learning and exposure to court practice. Referring to the growing use of Artificial Intelligence in law, he cautioned students against excessive dependence on AI and stressed the need for human reasoning and legal scrutiny.
Senior Additional Advocate General Monika Kohli highlighted the importance of patient listening to both the Bench and opposing counsel. She advised young lawyers to treat every case as an opportunity to learn and remain committed to integrity and patience.
A.D. Johnson Christy, Manager, Special Projects for Academic Initiatives, Surana & Surana International Attorneys, said moot courts and mock trials help students develop advocacy skills, precision, preparation and the ability to respond to unpredictable situations.
NMIMS Chandigarh won the Best Team award, while MIET School of Law, Jammu, was declared runner-up.
The Best Speaker Award went to AnushkaBhardwaj of NMIMS Chandigarh, while Unnati Jain of Lloyd Law College, Greater Noida, won the Best Student Advocate Award. The Best Memorial Award was won by the team from GNDU, Amritsar.
Prof Arvind Jasrotia delivered the vote of thanks. A cultural programme was also presented by students of the Department of Law.
