Ruckus in Assembly as BJP members hold mock proceedings, four MLAs marshalled out

SRINAGAR, Sep 28: The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly witnessed uproar on Monday as BJP members protesting a resolution seeking urgent restoration of statehood entered the Well of the House, tore business papers and conducted mock proceedings. Four legislators were later marshalled out amid continued sloganeering and disruptions.
The commotion followed a notice moved by the BJP seeking removal of Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather over his decision to allow Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's statehood resolution to be taken up in the House. The BJP alleged that the resolution had been admitted in violation of rules. The Speaker said a motion for his removal could be taken up after the prescribed 14-day period.
Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma said the BJP supported restoration of statehood but opposed the wording of the resolution, particularly references to autonomy and special status.
"We want that statehood be restored. It is our agenda. But the kind of resolution they have brought, it is in violation of the Constitution and is unacceptable," Sharma said.
Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Chaudhary questioned the opposition to the statehood resolution and referred to the Centre's stated commitment to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
"Are we going to give up statehood? What is wrong with the resolution for statehood?" Chaudhary asked, while urging the Speaker to put the motion against him to vote.
BJP members subsequently entered the Well, raised slogans and tore copies of business papers. BJP MLA Sham Lal Sharma conducted mock proceedings from the Well while other party legislators sat on the floor of the House.
The situation escalated further as members from the opposition and treasury benches exchanged slogans. The Speaker repeatedly warned the protesting legislators to maintain discipline and said strict action would be taken against those disrupting proceedings.
Amid the continued uproar, BJP MLAs Vikram Randhawa and Arvind Gupta, along with Congress MLAs Irfan Hafiz Lone and Iftikhar Ahmad, were marshalled out of the House.
The disruption also saw Congress members raising slogans against the BJP-led government at the Centre, while Lone displayed a banner seeking the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Deputy Chief Minister Chaudhary urged the Speaker to direct the Leader of Opposition to apologise for what he described as "unparliamentary language" against the Chief Minister.
"This is not a street," Chaudhary said.
The protests came during the debate on the statehood resolution moved by Omar Abdullah. The resolution was subsequently passed by the Assembly through a voice vote amid a BJP walkout, calling for the immediate and urgent restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
