BSF constable dies of gunshot fired from own rifle

JAMMU, Oct 7: A 27-year-old woman constable of the Border Security Force (BSF) died of a gunshot wound received from her service rifle at a forward border post near the International Border in R S Pura Sector on Wednesday, officials said.
Constable Raj Lakshmi sustained a gunshot wound at Border Outpost Sushil at around 3 pm.
The circumstances leading to the firing are yet to be ascertained, officials said. The injured constable was provided initial treatment at the Sub-District Hospital in R S Pura before being referred to Government Medical College (GMC) Hospital, Jammu, for specialised treatment.
Doctors declared her dead on arrival, officials said. Her body was shifted to the mortuary for post-mortem, they said.
"It is premature to say whether the constable deliberately fired the weapon or whether it was an accidental discharge," police said.
Inquest proceedings have been initiated to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to the incident, they said.
