JAMMU, Oct 11: The indefinite Punjabi Lang-uage Morcha launched by the All J&K Sikh Sangat entered its eleventh day on Sunday, with rallies from Miran Sahib, Maralia and Camp Gole Gujral reaching the main dharna site in Jammu to press for official language status for Punjabi in Jammu and Kashmir.
The peaceful demonstrations witnessed participation from members of the Sikh community, while several religious and community organisations extended their support to the demand for recognition of Punjabi, citing its linguistic, cultural and religious significance in the region.
Among those backing the Morcha were the All District Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee Alliance (Kashmir), Sikh Nowjawan Sabha, Camp Gole Gujral, Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha at Guru Tegh Bahadur Nagar, Gurdwara Singh Sabha at Raina Colony, Babliana, Gurdwara Singh Sabha, Dharap, and Sikh Nowjawan Sabha, Raina Colony. The Akal India Pingalwara Charitable Society, Amritsar, also questioned the exclusion of Punjabi from official language status in Jammu and Kashmir.
Taranjit Singh Tony, Chairman of Gurdwara Rani Talab, Digiana, and a prominent voice of the Morcha, said the campaign was peaceful, democratic and constitutional.
He said the demand was not directed against any language or community but sought recognition for Punjabi while respecting the region's linguistic diversity.
