New Delhi, Nov 7: President Droupadi Murmu on Saturday congratulated citizens on the 151st anniversary of the composition of the national song 'Van-de Mataram', describing it as a symbol of India's national identity, self-respect and devotion to the motherland.
In a message posted on X, the President said the song had served as a rallying cry of courage, unity and determination for patriots during the freedom movement.
"Even today, it symbolises our national identity, self-respect and devotion to the motherland," she said.
Murmu expressed hope that citizens would embrace the spirit of putting the nation first, embodied in 'Vande Mataram', and contribute towards nation-building. The national song was composed by renowned Bengali novelist and poet Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay on November 7, 1875, on the occasion of AkshayaNavami.
The song played a significant role in inspiring the freedom struggle and fostering a sense of national unity among people.
