Jammu, Nov 7: The Directorate of Fire and Emergency Services on Saturday issued a fire safety advisory here on the eve of Diwali, urging citizens to celebrate the festival of lights in a safe and responsible manner by strictly adhering to prescribed fire prevention measures.
The directorate has advised people to purchase firecrackers only from licensed vendors and use legally permitted products in open spaces, away from residential buildings, vehicles and other combustible materials.
Children should burst crackers only under adult supervision, while elderly persons and pets must be kept at a safe distance.
The advisory stresses the need to keep buckets of water or sand and fire extinguishers readily available. People have also been advised to wear cotton clothes & closed footwear, and ensure that 'diyas' and candles are placed on stable surfaces away from curtains and other inflammable materials.
Emphasising electrical safety, the directorate has cautioned against overloading sockets and using damaged wires or substandard decorative lights.
Decorative lighting and unnecessary electrical appliances should be switched off before leaving homes or going to bed. LPG cylinders and other ignition sources must be kept away from firecrackers.
The public has been advised against bursting crackers in crowded places, narrow lanes, balconies, rooftops or enclosed spaces, particularly near hospitals, schools, religious places, petrol pumps and LPG storage facilities.
People should not hold crackers while lighting them or attempt to relight unexploded firecrackers, the advisory said. The directorate has also urged citizens to ensure that used firecrackers are completely extinguished before disposal and not leave burning diyas, candles or incense sticks unattended. In case of any fire incident, the public has been urged to immediately contact Fire and Emergency Services for timely assistance.
